My first $45 tank of gas!

12.8 gallons? my tank takes 13.25 according to the shell near my work.

i put 40 bucks in today and it only got my 3/4 of a tank. didint bother to check the prices as i was on fumes...

I prefer to get gas before I need it. In other words, when the needle is close to E. I don't like the car to go beyond that if I can avoid it. The amount of gallons you buy, as long you fill the tank all the way up and reset the trip meter, will result in accurate average miles per gallon. So, in other words, if I fill the tank today, reset the trip meter, then, any time I get gas, regardless of how much gas is left in the tank, so long as I fill it up to the top, then divide the number of miles I drove between refueling (displayed on the trip meter) by the number of gallons I purchased, that will tell me my average mpg. Then, after I write down the trip meter mileage on the gas reciept, I reset the trip meter before I leave the gas station for next time. I usually keep a pen in my car and I use the calculator in my cellphone to do the math and write that on the gas reciept as well.

Shoot, $150 didn't fill up the old Dodge last time. It cost us $52 to fill up my car last week. I stoped counting how much and started driving slower.

Hmm, didn't seem to notice the difference that much.. Especially when comparing it to the over $10.00/gal in Europe.

Let my car idle for almost an hour today while eating lunch so I could enjoy the A/C. Gotta spend that economic stimulus package somehow.

Yeah, it seems the only way to save money on gas is to fill up the tank every day, regardless of how full or empty the tank is.

So I was driving along 226 (in case you forgot thats in NC) and my gas light was on. I checked the range and it said I had 34 miles to go. So I pushed it. Saw a gas station (I am not kidding) 50 feet away. Thought ok stop and get it. Did I make it???? NO. I ran out of gas right in the middle of the road. Couldn't even get it out of the street. Fortunately, I now live in an area where people still want to help others. So this kind man helped me push it over to the side of the street while I called my hubby. If you all remember this has happened 2x before but I took it into the dealership there and they supposedly fixed it. The sensor wasn't working. This last tank of gas I only got 20.4 mpg. My gauge was reading half way between the light (that was on) and the 1/4 mark. THAT SUCKS. So I called the Scottsdale dealership because I was a little upset that I ran out of gas. They are thinking that maybe a gasket is not on properly or the sensor is bad again. So I will be taking it to the dealership here to have it looked at. Its just frustrating.

From now on, I will be filling it up at a half or above. My gauge will never go below 1/2 again!

One of the advantages of determining your own mileage, rather than relying on the cars computer, is that by resetting the trip odometer at each fill up, you'll get a great understanding of approximately how many miles you can drive on a tank of gas. I know my MINI typically goes 450 miles on a tank, my Blazer 300 miles per tank.

When my fuel gauge in my Blazer broke, I was in no hurry to get it fixed, because I knew as long as I filled up the tank and reset the trip odometer, I could go at least 300 miles. I never ran out of gas and about six months later, did get the fuel gauge fixed...just to have it.

Yep, good tips Carey. Also make sure you reset the average speed and average mpg on the Minis computer each time you fill up if you want it to give you the most accurate number. You do that by pressing the display button and then holding it down on those displays, and they should reset back to Zero.

It's far from perfect, but I know some who have never reset it, then don't understand why it gives them an inaccurate number on a specific tank of gas. The longer you go without resetting it, the longer average number its giving you, and less accurate it will be for your must current tank. Reset it after each fill-up and you SHOULD get a closer calculation for that fill-up your running on.

I reset everything everytime I fill up. Thats a habit that I have had in every car that I have owned. I am driving slower too...which is real hard for me. I also use my cruise every chance I get to save gas mileage.
