MINI Crossman!

Postby scuzzlepook » Mon May 05, 2008 5:34 pm

MINI enthusiasts have a whole new reason to get excited, now that the name of the company's upcoming crossover has been released. The MINI Crossman, previously referred to internally as the "Colorado," will bring the brand firmly into new territory. This news comes from an auto motor und sport interview with MINI CEO Kay Segler.
What will likely be called the R58 within BMW from here on out, the Crossman is expected to ride higher than current MINI models, and have All Wheel Drive, making it a potential choice for off-roaders. With these new capabilities, MINI plans to expand their customer base to include young men who want something a little more "masculine" than the current models.
Initial response to the new name has made some wonder if MINI lost its creative edge. Likewise, one potential downside to the company releasing a crossover is if they will end up alienating the fan base that has rallied around the small car brand since the release of the Cooper. A possible look for the crossover, displayed below, makes the MINI appear as if it were named in the Mitchell Report on steroid use in baseball.

This new vehicle will also mark the first time a MINI is assembled outside the U.K. Austrian manufacturer Magna Steyr will build the car for MINI, which is rapidly running out of space at their current facilities.

The MINI Crossman is scheduled for release in 2010. Segler says there are currently no plans for a fifth MINI model.

Looks like a four door Clubman. I would rather they build a 2 seat sports car, than go the SUV / offroad route.

BMW is working on a two-seater based off of the MINI platform that will form the basis of a Triumph concept car later this year and may eventually see production. This seemingly incredible news comes from this morning

I thought Mini already had a 2 seater version. They called it the GP!

I was considering the 2010 Crossman but the 4 doors really takes away from the "Mini look". So it looks like a 2005 S for Gina.

Not to bad looking. I would have to see the interior. You know that with a larger dash they may have to go to more of a driver focused rather than rally inspired design.
That would be a shame.

"while the Crossman will be built by Magna Steyr as the Oxford plant which builds the MINI has no free production capacity due to high demand for the MINI model."

That kinda sucks... a MINI model not built in Oxford. Magna Steyr only has three production plants. Austria, France, and one on Ohio... Wonder if they will build them here in the US?!?!

Also - I corrected there miss capitulation of MINI in their article!!!
