Check engine light = no bueno

Postby AZMini » Tue Aug 19, 2008 10:02 pm

Well, I'm waiting for the tow truck for a jaunt to the new MNS. I drove home from work and parked in the garage. Grabbed something and headed back out. Check engine light comes on and the car will barely get up to 3000 rpm and it has no power. It idles and runs fine, just no rev and no power. Called roadside assist for a tow truck and then called MNS. They say it might just be a throttle sensor or something like that.

Sounds like classic limp mode after throwing some sort of code. Seems like they have most of the initial R56 bugs worked out, other than a few heat related ones, so yeah, I'm sure its something straight forward, but still a big inconvenience for sure. Good luck, will be curious to hear the outcome/cause.

I have the CarMD device that plugs into the OBDII connector and reads those codes, then you connect to the internet and it tells you what the codes are, and from a database of experience, tells you the most likely cause of the codes and, based on your zip code, the average price you should expect to pay in your area to have it repaired.

I've owned it since 2006 and the only time I ever used it was when my sister came over with her Ford Explorer and it read the code and the diagnostic and price was dead-on (intake manifold gasket leak in her case).

For $95, it lets you register it to up the three cars and run up to six diagnostic reports a month. I haven't seen a check engine light on my Mini, Blazer or BMW ever, so I'm sorta disappointed I never get to use it, but I always have it in my MINIs glovebox...just in case.

The tow truck finally came (1.3 hours late) and the Mini is snuggly in bed with its friends at the dealer. They'll call be tomorrow and let me know what it is.

Turned out to be the throttle control module. While they were at it, they found my catalytic converter was bad too so they are replacing it.

Sounds like they knew what was wrong with it before you brought it in, so that generally means they've seen this problem numerous times before. Something to take note of, I think.

Maybe, maybe not. I was able to give them a pretty accurate description of what it was doing so it may have pointed in one direction.

Anyways, I have the Mini back now. Yay!! The double-pull on the passenger door handle to unlock doesn't work now so I'm waiting on a call back to see if that is something that is set or a problem.
